The New Zealand quake was really, really bad. We don't usually see this kind of devastation in western countries after an earthquake.

Was really surprised to see so much damage and so many casualties from a 6.3 - not really a big quake. Looks as though they were very unlucky though and it was very shallow (only 5km deep) so that's likely a lot to do with it.
Me too. I have no doubt that the building codes in New Zealand are rigid... yet some of the damage I saw is akin to Haiti. Most of the buildings looked fine.
