I keep seeing nonsense like this.
Even as China grudgingly accepts the mantle of the biggest energy consumer, investment dollars are being poured into renewable energy research. China has already surpassed the United States as the largest producer of clean energy, whether it be hydro, wind, solar, or nuclear.
How much you want to bet that wind and solar account for less than 5% of the "clean" energy China produces, with nuke plants and
Three Gorges accounting for the rest? There's nothing "clean" about Three Gorges. And Tom Friedman is still an idiot.

It has been almost twenty years since my first visit to China...it was poluted, dirty and depressing. Given their growth and improved living conditions I think they have made good trade offs in getting where they are without a revolution. Abortions took care of unwanted females, and sub-perfect births to control population..so that ain't a new idea of the left...anyway, yes they polute and ten years from now they will polute more (but in relation to GDP I think it will be less), their standard of living in general will be higher and with a billion people wanting to live a better life that is a price they are willing to pay..and they don't care if you or I approve. Now that I think about it Mexico City may be worse than Peking..err Beijing.
Having just recently flown into China (Beijing to be exact)...and spending a short time there, I can attest to the pollution and smog that I witnessed. Very depressing to be sure. A general, depressing haze envelops everything. Never witnessed that in Thailand, KL Malaysia, and Taiwan in my travels.
For labor day let's keep in mind that third world labor can do anything we can....they just need the tools. Their parents starved and worked endless hours living with the livestock...their eyes on the west has them hungry for more, one way or another they are going to progress in a time frame that benefits them. China, India, Cambodia..and Africa is just coming to the party.
