Another meme I've seen lately is Barack Obama is Ronald Reagan, circa this time 28 years ago. I have vague recollections of the period... I was heading off to college, and the mood of the country was pretty bad. It was a double-dip recession, we were all doomed, US manufacturing was being destroyed, the deficits were exploding, a certain Asian country was going to rule the world. (I was too busy paying attention to girls and beer at the time for all of this to fully register.) Within a year, everything changed.
Obama has at least two years left. Who knows what will happen in the second half of Barry's rule. My gut instinct is we're screwed, but I hope that I am wrong. From a purely "I got family I have to take care of" position, I hope that Barry does a Reagan '84.

Even Tip O'Neil like Reagan. People liked him so much, he was so friendly, they thought he was stupid, all the while he was reading Nobel's Hyack and Von Miese tracts. And, you might remember the GW Bush like draft doging attacks on 'Ronnie Raygun'. No mention of him enlisting in 1938, becoming an officer.....before the war. Neither Obama, nor not one in a hundred around him has ever served.( The military is so low rent for these august souls. )
No, Obama is no Reagan. Reagan went to Eurka in the heartland, not the decayed lefty feather farms of Harvard. He knew his father, mother and family. Unlike Obama, another fatherless black male.
An affirmitive action, fatherless product of avowed communists, lefty loser decayed schools, drifting though community action/begging wealthy liberal whites is no way to go through life, the poor bastard. He never had a chance.
Screwed is right. This guy will always revert to what he knows and what has proven sucessful for him in the past....but he has always been critic in the back who had the luxury of never being a leader, he just gave hate speeches. SO he will continue to identify new sub-groups to hate and rehash old class/race/gender/age/region/etc. envy/greed/slothness/etc.Thanks to all who voted for him and the moron of a VP.
With a potential change in congress he will be in heaven....just think of the daily headlines "Obama says: " and then goes on to attack Republicans while telling the people who important it is that we "just get along" and "avoid politics". The press will go along and I am afraid so will the voters and we will have not 2.5 more years but 6.5 more years.
I hope the economy improves as well, but I remember very well the Ronnie days and this is much, much worse. Not even Ron could pull us out of this mess, much less O.
No, we can only hope the NEXT one is Reagan. This one is worse than Carter.
Reagan had leadership skills, and most importantly, a love for country that shone through everything. Obama is a faceless drone in a suit.
Well, I hope you're all wrong. But I suspect you aren't.
I'm waiting for Obama to do the 'malaise' speech this winter or next...
Wearing a sweater only Wilford Brimley could love.
One 'advantage' Reagan has is that his recession was about as deliberately started as you can get. It was a needed evil to end the runaway inflation of the 70's that had turned into stagflation under the Carter oil crisis. Volker could have done the same thing under Carter that he did under Reagan but it would have been an even more political suicide move than what he was doing (which was nothing).
The benefit of the Volker recession is that once prices stabilized the economy took off again. As it stands, Obama (who has Volker as an advisor) does not have the tools to bring the economy around. Such as bringing down the Prime rate (which was high -unlike now where it is rock bottom) and starting deficit spending (which we have been doing since the 80's). That's why I worry a recovery may be long time coming - but I have seen some signs of possibly improvement.
I think the Fed and Treasury are going to do things to the mortgage market that will shock us.
