US Airways, United in Merger Talks

Per the WSJ:
US Airways Group Inc. is in talks to merge with the parent of United Airlines in a move that would create the country's second-largest carrier, according to people familiar with the situation.

The discussions have heated up in recent weeks, according to the people, while the move is also viewed by some in the industry as an effort by United to rekindle a deal with Continental Airlines Inc.
Please keep Continental far, far away from this abomination. I like my hometown airline. Let United and US Air go TU so the stronger carriers can pick up the pieces.

What is amazing to me is that people keep buying their debt only to get defaluted upon over and over and over and over again.

I say let them merge with FannieMay so it will be easier to write it off later...giant sink holes that are just one blow up after another...

US Air loves this sort of hype. Remember how they were gonna buy Delta a few years ago? I don't put much stock in this poorly sourced speculation.

On the other hand, United and Continental have been aligning their products furiously in the last year, and have very complementary route maps/hubs. United may be trying to push Continental further from their strategic partnership to full merger by letting slip these rumors and trying to create urgency. A CO/United merger seems much more likely to me in the next year or two.
