Mafia Wars: Smolensk

As you know,
Polish president Lech Kaczynski and other senior officials are among dozens of people killed when their plane crashed in western Russia.
Like many I suspected this was one of Putin's ops when I first heard the news. But as I think about it further, I do think the accident was due to pilot error. Putin is anything but stupid, and surely he knows that any suspicions would instantly point in his direction. And frankly it was pretty stupid of the Polish government to put so many high-ranking leaders on one plane.

What are the chances of a commercial plane crash? Extremely low. Now factor in what are the chances of a commercial airliner crashing with the entire Polish ruling class aboard.

I actually agree with you that it's likely an accident from human error. I'm just astounded at what a low probabilty event it is.

A big loss for Poland, Lets hope the death of the President is not related or linked to the conspiracy theories.

When the ground controllers are telling you to divert to another airport because of the fog, you divert.

Instead of crashing on your 4th landing attempt!

What are the chances of a Tupolev airliner crashing, specifically, in bad visibility conditions near a third world (yeah Russia is third world in many ways) airport?

How many Polish people does it take to land an airplane? :-p

One note of concern is that Kaczynski had previously demanded to be landed despite weather conditions (that was in Tblisi), but fortunately in that instance the pilot said no way.

I think he might have said something like "Sir, you are my commander on the ground, but I am the commander in the air." I wonder if the bloke got fired for that. Better to be fired than have everyone dead.

We may never know if this was a repeat of the Tblisi incident but with a different, fatal decision by the pilot.

I immediately thought it was Putin, too, until I read that it was the Pilot's fourth attempt at landing in foggy weather. There should be radio logs to reflect that.

Not true. On Airliners.net they are saying that the plane circled three times then crashed as they were trying to land. A bad translation turned it into "attempted to land four times."
