How Americans see Americans

A post on Dvorak labels this graphic How Europeans see the US, but I think it applies to Americans as well. Name the prejudice or stereotype and it's there.

I also doubt that Europeans even know places like Indiana exist, much less have opinions about it.

Um, but we do have ranches, and do know people like the Ewings, so, guilty as charged! Ditto on the gun slinger caricature. Don't mess with Texas.

I think most Europeans know about places like Indiana, Montana etc., they see the names mentioned in the movies, they just don't know where they are (probably like many Americans). Most probably think it's just outside New York or Chicago but do be aware that on the whole Europeans do tend to be better traveled than Americans.

Interested to know if there's a similar map for Europe.

there's a cool map of europe that does the same thing created as a joke by an artist. I think the europeans were pretty offended, not much of a sense of humor.

"on the whole Europeans do tend to be better traveled than Americans."

That's like saying northeastern state residents tend to be better travelled than Americans. European countries are small and close together. There is little cost and plenty of good reasons to visit neighboring polities when they are close together and trade extensively with each other.

And for all of that travelling the europeans have supposedly done, they are as ethnocentric as ever for it. Take the French, for example.

Anon,
I think you are discounting the propensity of Euro-peons to travel to visit interesting cultures where sweet young boys are available for a pittance.

I've lived in Switzerland for almost 20 years (originally from MA) and can tell you that many Europeans are as ignorant about the geography of the States as we are about their neck of the woods.
@Joe: that link does't seem to work
