The China That Can Say No

China is feeling cocky. A new book there is popular.
BEIJING (Reuters) - China should build the world's strongest military and move swiftly to displace the United States as the global "champion," a Chinese PLA officer says in a new book reflecting swelling nationalist ambitions.

The call for China to abandon modesty about its global goals and "sprint to become world number one" comes from a People's Liberation Army (PLA) Senior Colonel, Liu Mingfu, who warns that his nation's ascent will alarm Washington, risking war despite Beijing's hopes for a "peaceful rise."

"China's big goal in the 21st century is to become world number one, the top power," Liu writes in his newly published Chinese-language book, "The China Dream."
There was a best-selling book that came out 21 years ago.

Is there any way to short Chinese hubris?

Funny I do not see a Chinese flag on Lou's flag counter. How can you be world leader and your people are out of contact with the rest of the world. Seriously, Iran is #45.

China is over-rated.

The same way many Americans think that the world ends at the Pacific and Atlantic ocean shores. ;-)

You are kidding right?

The average Chinese is more worldly than the average American?

Just because Europeans travel to each others small countries like we travel through North America does not make them any more worldly. It is just another liberal meme. Most educated professional Americans travel outside the US regularly. Not to mention our own huge continent.

The real issue is that the US is the dominant world power. Thus, we take the blame for everything. If we get involved it is our fault. If we ignore it, it is our fault. The only way to lead is to make decisions with good conscience. Looking for consensus with unequal partners (those that do not recognize basic human rights or freedoms) leads to failure.
