Palm took a massive dump today. Few people want the Pre or Pixie. Palm is clearly aiming for the ladies with their marketing, but the attempt was a flop. Women, like men, want lots of apps and a nice display.
Speaking of being premature, like everyone else I wrote off Microsoft. It has a dumb name (like all of Microsoft's products except Bing), but Windows Phone 7 Series (who the hell is responsible at Microsoft for naming products?) will be a big hit I think. Yeah, it's a Zune phone. But I like it. Just keep Ballmer away from the demos. And get the IE logo off there.

With an R&D budget larger than most competators sales, they can take their time. Never too fancy, never too early, never too little promotion...just moving forward....look what they did in the game market...OK Zune to now has been a flop, but they can continue to invest for a decade when they want to enter a market. A cash machine that most folks are effectivly locked into.
Has anyone noticed that the Sony walkman is a really nice piece of equipment and it costs about 1/4th of what a comparable ipod or Zune does?
Hey Lou, off subject but toooooo funny. The captions could write themselves about the shark tank developing a huge water leaking crack in the Dubai mall:

Mrs Dawg's new BB Bold2 arrived yesterday. iPhone 4 in 10 weeks. There's no room for MSware.
Open Office is two/three updates away from Only Office. Right after that tell me why you need Windows. Mr. Softy 2010 = Sun 1998. [I was going to say something about Wang and DEC but I trust you get it.]
w,
I was curious and went looking for Sony Walkman info, since I hadn't looked in a while, and I do like Sony stuff as well as Apple stuff (and Canon stuff, and so on, I appreciate many brands)... I can't find any Walkman that comes in even 20% cheaper than the *equivalent* iPod. What am I missing? I looked around Amazon, perhaps that's my problem?
You can get a Sony Walkman NWZ-S545 for $79 at the outlet store. It has 16GB and does video. The screen is much bigger than the Nano. While it does not have the touch features or as much memory as the most expensive iPod models you are looking at $160-400 for an Apple product as you well know. I think the value is real good for the Sony. I got my kids smaller ones more comparable to the nano but with less memory for $39 several years ago at Christmas. They have taken a beating and work fine. (Kids were 6 and 9 at the time.)
I am amazed to see friends drop $300 for an iPod to give their elementary school kid.
Sony now has software that will convert iTunes format to MP3 with a simple drag and drop interface. Much easier than burning a CD then importing it over the M4P formatted songs in iTunes.
I thought it was cool that Sony used the Walkman as a hard drive device to copy the software onto the computer when you first set up the player. It was always silly getting an install disk with players I have bought before.
Last WSJ article on smartphones essentially said "stick a fork in Palm"
