Houston civil servants are underpaid

I keep hearing that Houston civil servants are underpaid and make less than their private-sector counterparts.
I am glad that former Houston mayor Bill White was watching out for us taxpayers when he was in office, and I am sure he will bring those very same skills with him to the Governor's Mansion.

We hear this all the time in CA, but the reason the govt employees believe that is because they dont actually meet people who work in the private sector. The talk to the consultants and government contractors who are getting paid $50 an hour, and they extrapolate that all private sector employees must make what these consultants and lobbyists make, and they are just being oppressed as public servants. In actuality they make significantly more than most private sector employees, especially after you factor in the benefits and retirement.

You mean they HIRE consultants that say they should be paid more. Try getting consulting gigs when you say that staff is overpaid. You will never get hired. However, if you get a rep as always saying that they are underpaid, a bit, then you will always have work.

I would love to see these folks try and get a career in the private sector paying anything close to what they get raping the taxpayer. That would make an awesome reality TV series.

Consultants making $50 have to save for their retirement and healthcare expenses. And they do not get paid to take time off. And they are not employed for life so they have to constantly be proving themselves.

They get quotes from consultants to justify their payroll. That said, without knowing what these peoples total packages look like (including benefits, etc.) vs the total in industry for comparable work....I don't know how to make such a comparison, but the line officers who are covering our behinds are worth a lot...now the top dogs are political hacks and they can be compared IMO.
