Well, a multi city ( 100s? ) and large rural welfare( Roman Mob) class.
An disconnected, unpatriotic financial, academic and commercial elite.
The Praetorian Guard of the government workers that now elect emperors on their say so, for gold, short week, vacations, benefits and pensions.
A political class of rank meritocracy ( Bush ), ornamental ( Obama ), or just plain idiots ( Pelosi, Reid ), degenerates ( Bwarny Fwank ).
Druid superstitious religions ( environmentalism ) ....
...and a decent middle class/working class, small businessman looking for a man on a white horse.
So, um, where do you see the class that will be the sustained change agent? I don't. Defeating, over time, or co-opting the middle class is childs play.
Adam Smith said there is a lot of ruin in a country. England has been on the decline for a hundred years, and it's still hanging in there. So too us. The life, opertunities, and ease of economic transactions and possiblities will die with us, and the new, harder, slower norm...will seem normal.
