Disaster Porn

I was 8. Things were tough all over. Disaster porn was in vogue.

Lots of big-name stars! I remember being absolutely terrified by the elevator scene. It gave me nightmares. Now it looks really cheesy. Still, I like seeing Walter Matuschanskayasky dressed in 1970's pimp wear while sitting in a bar, oblivious.

Where's the 2009 disaster porn? That retarded 2012 movie looks like a bust.

Hey, character played by Slim Pickens! Instead of weaving back and forth, just stop the damn truck!

I remember seeing this recently on a cable channel - the one thing that stuck to me is that the foley sound they used for a jackhammer in the recovery scene sounded exactly like the Pulse Rifles in 'Aliens'

Pretty good special effects for models.

Today we'd have screaming people spilling out of those collapsing buildings.

Makes you want to buy a sturdy metal desk (with large kneehole) if you live in earthquake country.

Oh man, Victoria Principal in that movie...be still my heart.
Honestly I still have a phobia about going on overpasses because of this movie. I remember fondly watching it on the roof my my parents station wagon at the drive-in in Pasadena. Good times.

2012: great SFX/CGI but crap story.

It's just not the same without SENSURROUND!

The following summer I remember they came out with Midway, starring Henry Fonda (I think?). That was the last use of Sensurround.

It was pretty cool stuff back then!

Yup, Midway screwed me up for roller coasters. Oddly enough, Jaws didn't scare me away from swimming. It must be an Irwin Allen thing.

The wikipedia entry for Sensurround says the last movie to use it was the Theatrical release of the Battlestar Galactica pilot episode.

I can't say either way since I didn't see it in the theater, but I think nobody did.

This Blog: Midway was about the Battle of Midway, you are thinking about Rollercoaster - which was another bit of disaster porn.
