I am not going to wade into the religion thing, but I will say that I hope he has a very painful recovery and many years of (deleted) using Lava Soap at Fort Leavenworth before he is executed.
First, let me say I am deeply concerned, and offer my condolences to the families who have lost a loved one to this domestic cowardly terrorist.
Having said that, it is perfectly alright to bring the religious aspect of the event into it, if it is part of the motivation.
When Jeffrey Lundgren killed an entire family, his religious affiliation (Mormon) was brought into it, since his adherence to a splinter sect was his motivation.
When William Kamm was in court and finally sentenced for sexual assault of young girls, his religion was an aspect.
David Koresh, Jim Jones, the list is long....
When JOhn Traviolta lost his son, when Tom Cruise even opens his front door, his religious affiliation is part of it.
Yet The media is cowardly in the face of Islamic extremism.
How is it that I (or anyone) could be called an islamophobe, yet I am not called a scientologi-ophobe?, or a Jehovas witnessophopbe, or a Exclisve brethrenophobe?
I speak out for instance against both, on largely the same grounds.
In short, it is absolutley valid to bring the religious aspect of it into the situation, if it is part and parcel of the event.
Yep when the "explanation" involves his religion then it is part of the root cause as expressed by the news accounts. Why not explore why hate seems to come over and over again with one common nexus...or perhaps more insane people are attracted to it...take your choice. I am open to being told different, but the head in the sand upfront denials are lame at this point.

In this case it evidently is.
Religion is a virus which will slowly but surely be eradicated from this Earth.

If some brands Islam were called cults rather than part of a religion, then we could reach a deeper understanding of its members actions.
An example would be Jim Jones who pretended to run a church but really it was a front for a cult as I understand it.
No "McMansion" for the Major:

Unemployment shoots to 10.2 percent, Lone Sacramento Grifter Largely To Blame, says Congress. :-p
What's the *actual* unemployment rate now? Something upwards of 30 percent?
Whoa, living in PFC housing? That aint right. An older officer living with a bunch on 18 yr old broke kids would drive anyone crazy.
I think it is safe to say "he wasn't right."
