Some company is/was trying like mad to index all those sites, an historical archive sort of. There's probably a lot of interesting info in those -- if you can sort through the old, outdated rubbish.
I'm a bit sad to see it go. It's almost like a library burning its old books just because they're old. (Which they of course don't do but have the same effect with what's called the annual book sale, with the remnants perhaps donated to Goodwill or the local book reseller).
AltaVista. Man, what a blast from the past. I remember after DEC sold it off that one of the "visions" a buyer had was to turn it into a porn specific search engine. Man, I hate seeing a once rightfully proud search engine getting abused like that. At least the management got it right-ish and went back to a straight search engine. Babelfish is the only reason I go back.
