Houston auto dealers

I did some car browsing today. Two things stand out:
  • The local Toyota dealers aren't carrying much in the way of stock. Very few cars or trucks.
  • The Honda dealers I went to were loaded. Each had dozens of Fit's on hand.
Don't know what to make of this, if anything.

Hard to say.

The Toyota dealer may be keeping his inventory low because he wants to limit your negotiating power by limiting what's on the lot ("Well, we don't have that, but we can order it. For a fee, of course").

Or maybe he can't get anyone to float him the cash to stock up.

Or maybe he got cleaned out during the govt. handout and hasn't got a new shipment in yet.

Or maybe he's just smart enough not to keep a ton of money tied up in inventory in a slow sales environment.

Lots you could say about Honda dealer on the flip side. The question is what's going on nationally.

I bought a used Toyota from a local Ford dealership. All in all, I was probably at the dealership four times, for a total of a couple of hours, and in all that time, I saw only two other customers. The sales guys were sitting in their cubicles looking bored and antsy. The only guy doing any business was the internet used-car salesman who sold me my car.

I've always gotten the best deals buying a used car off a lot where they don't carry the brand. A few years ago, I bought my Toyota truck at a Nissan dealership and they practically gave it away-- they just didn't want a Toyota on their lot, I guess...

NHSteph, right on!

A friend of mine showed up in my friveway one weekend with a niiiicely tricked-out Ford Fusion that he'd picked up for thousands less than he should have paid. It was at a Saab dealer.

The salesman told him point blank that they didn't want the thing on the lot, and make him any decent offer. (My guess is also that the saleman checked my friend out and figured out fast that since he was jobless with crap credit, he was in no position to buy a new Saab anyway.)

Lou,

One of the reasons why there are all those Fit's on the lots is that people from California, Arizona and other places are coming here to buy them. The dealers in those states have put a premium price on them because of the demand. My best friend wanted one and she found that she could get one here for $5k cheaper here then in Tucson or Phoenix so she flew out here, bought it and drove it home. She told her friend in San Diego about it and her hubby flew out here, bought one and drove it back.
