You should have your house paid off by then and you've eliminated the cost of going to work... wear and tear on your car, new car every couple of years, gasoline, etc. Save money during your working years to pay for your post-retirement European vacations.
I love how the people of California dictate not only the legality of my marriage, but now pension! For me to even earn HALF of what I currently make I'll be working for over 35 years....
couple that to the fact that my State income has seen ONE, ONLY ONE cost of living increase and that was 3%! When you calculate the cost of living increases compared to the REAL cost of living State employees are 48% behind!I hear the cost of housing has dropped dramatically in California and will drop even further. Are you willing to give back part of your salary to reflect this?
Next, gogowoody gets down to it.
With a Masters Degree in Biology, I make BARELY $3,000 a month and the STUPID, IGNORANT public says that I live high on the hog! I'm tired of being viewed as some "well-off public employee" I'm far from it, in fact I make SO LITTLE compared to my un-educated private sector friends its ridiculous! It just goes to show State budgeting from the ballot box DOESN'T work and so does the public defining my retirement.Hey gogowoody, most of us stupid, ignorant, uneducated private-sector workers busting our butts don't get a pension. But we're paying for yours. Maybe you should show just the tiniest sliver of gratitude?

He's shitting himself.
More, please.
I hate those kinds of employees. I personally am super thankful that I get a traditional pension as a teacher. Sure, I made more in my 401k in the private sector but you can't beat the safety with a stick.
When ever a govy worker says that they are underpaid, I say to then open their job, with it's benefits, to public bidding. Because, you know, no one will ever bid to do it for less, what with all those union like rules, holidays, hour lunches, having to have that project done by the next three years....
The idea of masses of people applying to do their work, such that it is, usually stops them complaining right then and there.
I do have to admit from being in gov work places and drinking with a lot of them in bars, they do deserve higher pay for one thing. The boredom. God do all their work days sound like living death.
I'm sure in his mind he's been spending his retiremnet in an up scale lifestyle...while looking down at the stupid folks working in industry paying for his benefits.
Of course he's upset that life may not be as he thinks it should be for him and his enlightend union members.
California's always been called a bellweather. Maybe it's true, maybe not. But in this case, I think it is. A lot of gov't workers, all over the country, are going to find out that what they're going to get is not what they were promised. It's about blood and stones, ponzi schemes, and demography. Oh, and SSI, Medicare, and "the public option" are pretty much in the same boat.
This guy a Boomer?
That would explain a lot... does anyone under age 40 even have a pension plan anymore?
Government workers?
Sorry to be the one to tell you this but with one in six, CORRECTION one in FIVE, of us now working for the State (something like East Germany), and the f*cking money has run out. I know you were promised an easy life and a fat pension by a walrus of a boss, who you have put up with sweating and puffing every time you bent over to pick up a paperclip, I know the chats by the coffee machine were your raison d'etre and your desk contains the worlds largest collection of fluffy animals along with great galleries of your spastic children's "artwork" on every wall. But it's over. The party is over.
So it's time to shave your legs, pits and the moustache, get your hair done, lose some weight, stop wearing sensible shoes, abandon the idea of knocking off at 5pm and throwing a sickie 20 times a year, reading People while having a sh*t, pack up your cuddly toys and "achievement awards", put back the stolen stationary, download the book you were writing in your "spare time" onto a memory stick.
AND GET A F*CKING PROPER JOB.
Shhh. Hear that? The sound of 20 million civil service sphincters puckering like poppies in the breeze. Bliss.

Insulting Rob Dawg was out of line. ;-)
Government workers?
I won't touch that argument. But I will say that the enormous pensions are killing us and they are becoming highly divisive.
We also need to stop pensioning out police officers and fire fighters when they hit 45. I know a lot of these guys who retire with a pension, then start new government careers to collect yet another pension. I'm not saying a 55-year-old should be walking a beat in the projects, but there are plenty of admin/back office jobs they could do instead of hiring additional layers of civilians.
Lou, you are right on that. I have seen numerous teachers that "retire" only to be rehired in the exact same position at nearly the same pay as before. That double dipping ticks me off.
My dad worked was an engineer and nobody else knew how to do the stuff that he did so a contractor hired him as a full time consultant. The contractor was hired to do what my dad did before at a huge increase of what my dad was paid before. So, it's not always just government employees.
I've met triple dippers...they like getting out of the house so they take a government jobs. There are lots of professions which are not for sixty year olds...doesn't mean that they should draw a pension at that point..just look for a different line of work...
