With union domination there was no other possible outcome.
"How did it come to this?"
I don't know, but when I read Atlas Shrugged it was pretty clear. I hate being one of those people but darn if the book wasn't pretty on target.
31 years old, eh? The classic generational stereotypes in action:
1. Boomers' forebears build up an institution
2. Boomers wreck it in every conceivable way, shape and form
3. Boomers' kids are forced to clean up after them. :-p
A punk who has never had a real job is now the "central planner" for the auto industry.
Unreal.
In twenty years we'll all being waiting for bags of government sorghum and talking about the good old days when we got cheese and frozen turkeys.
What, no Soylent Green™...? ;-)
A punk who has never had a real job is now the "central planner" for the auto industry.
CORRECTION: A punk with the "correct" brand of education. The Ivy League takes care of its own.
At least he didn't come from the auto industry.

Yes, I have heard this excuse. It's pretty flimsy. The kid's education consists of a BA in political science. He's never run so much as a lemonade stand.
It's a patronage job, and one of the most bizarre in American history.
He was the only one that showed up meetings of the automotive task force. Sometimes just showing up is enough.
I don't know what all the fuss is about. Do you really think he can do any worse than the CEO's that preceded him? What's he going to do? BK the company?

Well maybe this guy can destroy GM and Chrysler like they need to be. Right now the U.S. car manufacturing industy is the laughing stock of the world. Just look at the garbage they make. If they paid me $1000 a month I might consider driving one of their cars. I'm tired of my European friends laughing at our car industry. It needs to die. Detroit needs to become a ghost town. Not one good thing ever comes out of that place. What else would you buy from a company in Detroit? Does that city have one redeeming quality? I can't think of any.
BA in Poli Sci? That's what Obama has, although he has said he did 'International Studies', his Columbia, non-honors degree is in 'Poli Sci'. That's how he got into Harvard Law, with the rigorous, non honors Political Science degree.
So you like me, just can not be aware of the intellectual heights, like something out of a German Philosophical Academy, that Political Science majors go through.

You telling me there are no better candidates? There are no former auto workers who went on to college? I'll bet there are dozens of MBA's who were former auto workers.

Why would we want a former auto worker doing this? You need someone who has no auto industry experience. They are the people that got us into this mess by having policies like "if you work for GM you can't drive a Toyoata", etc... That's one of the reasons the cars are so bad. Most of the people that work for GM have never owned a foreign car. They need to start over from scratch. Every single brand they have is ruined. No one wants to drive a Pontiac. Even if it could fly me to work, as long as it says Pontiac on the back I'm not going to be caught dead in it.

Going a bit hyperbolic there, aren't we? How about someone who's worked in the Japanese auto industry? There's got to be a few of them who can be cajoled into the job.
And if you want to avoid the auto industry taint (as you perceive it), then at least pick someone with rock solid business/manufacturing experience.
And can this ignorant young boy do any worse than the previous CEO of Ford? I hate to make predictions, but: Just watch. Even with billions of dollars of handouts, he'll still fail and come back for billions MORE in handouts, taken from our pockets at the point of a knife, so to speak.
The automotive industry needed to fail. It was their mentality and greed that brought them down. "Buy American and American works". Are any Americans working now? What the heck? If I want to buy american, I'll buy american. If I want to buy foreign, I'll buy foreign. It's my choice. If they didn't make such crap and tried to change the way they produced things, they wouldn't be in this mess. They didn't change with the times. And as quiet as kept, they probably weren't in as much trouble as they say. The down-turn of the economy was just an excuse for every business owner to cry for a bail out. Give me a break!
