Too fat for Boy Scouts?

Phew. That was close. I missed the maximum allowable weight by 60 pounds. I'm 6' and it says a guy my height is within the normal range at 140 pounds? That's nucking futs. Even at my skinniest as a 16-year-old lifting bags of garden mulch all day for a summer job I never weighed less than 155, and I didn't have an ounce of visible fat on me.

A 6 footer is listed as a Recommended 140 to 199, with a Maximum Accepted of 239. That seems reasonable for an active club.

That 370 pound land whale in the article isn't going to garner any sympathy.

Seems to me they tried to throw the net pretty wide. 140 seems really thin, and 199 seems a little heavy unless you're a true athlete. 240 is heavy for 6-0.

Other than faulting it for using weight as a crude measure of fitness, it seems reasonable.

Holy cow 239 is pretty damned big for 6'. I speak from experience.

Thank god they're so overwhelmed with applicants that they can turn away help.

Dan...

They don't turn people away for reasons of weight. I have scoutmasters that weigh close to 300 lbs. The only thing they're not allowed to do is participate in High Adventure Activities that are run by the National Council. Those low ends of the range are pretty low but the top ends are appropriate in my opinion.

heh heh, land whale.

I've actually known some real sticks of human beings who might be 6' and 140lbs. Its just the way the body frame forms.

Hey! Where'd you get that picture? ;-)

Those have to be real old numbers say recruitment guidelines for WW-II.

It's kind of silly. I'm at the high end of acceptable 5'10" 195 but I also have 18" calves. You know from mountain climbing and playing rugby and bicycle racing. I also have a thick neck from varsity swimming. Despite large hands I can't come close to wrapping my fingers around my wrist. Commonly called big boned.

There's fat and there's fat.

I was 175 through college and solid as a brick.

15 years later, I'd be ecstatic to get back below 200.

I certainly will not be signing up for any High Adventure Activities at my current weight.
