It's amazing to me that California, a state that has it all, has become a complete basket case. Longtime readers of my tiny corner of the web know that San Francisco is my favorite place in the world (outside of my home), warts and all. Don't accuse me of hating on Cali.I mean, really. WTF? California would have a budget surplus right now if expenditures were simply aligned with inflation and population growth. Instead, Californians are staring at a shortfall that would bankrupt many countries. Assuming the other 49 states bail out California this year (which appears to be a certainty), what about next year? And the year after? No way will the bailouts continue. Those of us in the rest of the country won't stand for it.

wujing,
Are you kidding me??
I think you've come to the wrong place. I'm willing to bet Lou's readers would not patronize a business that places an ad in the comments of a non-commerical blog. Why should Lou have to subsidize your business? I don't think stealing is too strong a word here. I'm hoping Lou removes your post. And Lou, if you do remove this guys ad, no hard feelings if you want to remove my rant.
Hah looks like you were way ahead of me. Good night!
I nuked the spammer, Leigh. :-)
Unions, plain and simple. They are a parasite whose sole motivation is to bleed its host to death.
And yes, the rest of the country will put up with it, sadly.
Check out Michael Badger...
a Stationary Engineer(!) at the Fine Arts Museum?
Your generosity is much appreciated.

The stationary engineer is probably the guy who takes care of the heating, a/c, etc.

Does this statement hold up if you ran into Pelosi?
Does this statement hold up if you ran into Pelosi?Absolutely. When I go to SF I understand that as a hillbilly redneck from Texas I will be immersed in the bath of nuttery and I accept it. Frothing moonbats are to be expected, and as a tourist they are fun to watch.
San Francisco is still Bum Town USA, though. That's a problem that I do have with my favorite city in the world. Those aggressive panhandlers everywhere in SF are not "homeless," they are bums. And I am willing to bet that even the most "progressive" San Fran liberal quietly feels the same way.
SF is my favorite US city. No, I don't like the aggressive ones who beg/extort. I like the cool weather and all the stuff to do. Although the last time I was there it was 100 degrees. This could only happen when I, the heat-sensitive, am visiting.
I'm not sure what we (meaning Joe or Jane average) CA citizen are supposed to do. I'm writing a long blog post about what I think the problems are, but I am not deluding myself that anyone is going to read it!
We may need some "bailout", although I wish that were not so. The reason would not be that we deserve it, but because we may be sliding into something like a deflationary spiral. Obviously we need to cut spending, but cutting too much at once might have us circling the drain due to our already very high unemployment and other signs of an economy in trouble--it's a bad time to do something hugely contractionary. I think we should be allowed to make the cuts in stages, to try to shock the economy less and give it a chance to adjust. Otherwise it could be cuts--less money gov't divisions or workers aka customers have to spend/less income tax money coming in to gov't and less sales for businesses--businesses fold or lay off more and even less tax revenue for gov't --bigger gov't deficit--more cuts--rinse, repeat...
