Bob: "Hey Jim, the Saturday auto section is filled with ads that promise 20% OFF MSRP. To get people on the lot we need a gimmick to break through the advertising clutter."Hey Chronicle ad managers, why did you allow this to slip through? You and I both know what they are trying to do. Ya'll have really lowered your standards.
Jim: "Got that licked, Bob."

Best Buy does this all the time. "The ad is wrong that's not the right description" Funny how the model number is always right though.
I remember a discount store that spent years; "Going Out for Business."
I honestly can't remember the last time I actually purchased a newspaper. It must have been years.
Still, there was a place in Pasadena that always had "going out of business" sales until they passed a law. Then soon after they started out having those "going out for business" sales. I could never believe people fell for those.
I feel for car dealers though. It's like lawyers, it's that 1% that are good that the get a bad name from the other 99%.
Anyone stop by Circuit City for their going out of business sales?
I think they raised prices if anything.
tesla is right. Consumerist.com has quite a few stories about just how ridiculously bad of a deal it is. Not ironically the same bad service that drove them out of business in the 1st place.
Paul writes,
My uncles were all successful dealers. Big multi product stores and one was a regional distributor for an entire company from Germany.
So, I used to look forward to them coming over to my parents house as I was car crazy. They always had a used car off the lot. Which I still liked as I was such a car crazy kid I would wash and clean them while they were at the house.
Years later when I got older and got a feel for business, I understood cars were just another roll at the bakery for them, and they weren't really in the car business, but the money business. The really rich uncle gave his kids old bombers, tanks.
I buy used vehicles now, and keep them for ten years and then start sniffing around for a year or so. I'd never buy new.
The things are a waste, and a pain, and just money pits.
Anyways, say what you want about the worst, sleaziest, lying, thief car dealer. Unlike government, no one forces you to 'deal' with them.
Naturally with Smiling Honest Democrat Used Socialist Dealer and across the street with Friendly Smiling Republican Dealership...you have consumer choice. Right?
A little Adam Smith.
"People of the same trade( politicians ) seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is im-possible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and jus-tice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary."
Looking at a '05 V70 2.5T for less than $9k asking. It looks like the used market is finally dropping.
Anon is right, nobody is forcing us to deal with car dealers anymore than we have to deal with stockbrokers or lawyers. When I was a broker (15 years) there were so many moronic and/or unethical types running around I would literally get sick. The hatred of most brokers is understandable. That's why being well known as a really honest broker got me so much business in my time. Same is true with contractors, car dealers, etc....
