California is toast

Arnie is ordering that California state workers stay home the first and third Friday's of each month until the budget crisis is solved. The Sac Bee website is predictably flooded with comments from state workers who are trying to justify their jobs.

Some want to strike because they think that it will show the average taxpayer how important state workers are. For those who believe that, I am old enough to remember the Federal government shut down in the mid-1990s. We got along just fine.

It's a moot point, though. The furloughs are only projected to save $1.3 billion. The projected deficit is $40 billion. State workers are kidding themselves. There will be massive layoffs of state employees in the coming year, not mere furloughs. There will be massive tax increases to boot. Nevada and Arizona, welcome the many new companies locating in your states as California corporations large and small get the hell out of that mess.

Chevron's corporate headquarters will make a nice addition to Houston.

Sorry, Benoit. I hate the little shitnugget but I don't want to drag his parents into this so I deleted your comment due to specifics. Interesting reading though. :-)

Should be fun for them, supporting their 26-year-old toddler and his half-million dollar debt. :-p
I wonder if Steve would even consider bringing on Casey at this point. If I was Steve I certainly wouldn't. Is the military no longer an option for shitnugget?

Pfft... he'd be court-martialed for insubordination within weeks.

He might be a good fit in the Navy though, on an aircraft carrier with lots of other sailors... lots of other male sailors. ;-)

The deficit is $45.3 billion now.

With 17% of GDP California has only a few legacy Fortune 500 HQs. They have no clue even as the U-Hauls are backing up to the businesses.

Welcome to the world of private sector-style 20% across the board paycuts, all you formerly insulated government employees.

Paul writes,

Thursday's NY Post had a article that pay and benefits costs for NY city employees is running near 200K per person per year.

Imagine if your landscaper, bar, restaurant or hundreds of business had that kind of cost?

Further, I don't think that folds into, and increases, the other costs of other costs like high disability rates, absenteeism, low productivity and quality that urban union work forces are unjustly(s/alert here) painted with.

Luckily, these high quality, highly productive, luck to have them, worker make up for costs with....with...minimimal supervisors.

Right?
Hello?
Bueller. Anyone?

(sounds of crickets here)

Anyways, yesterday I hung out in a local saloon, nursing pint PBRs. A town housing authority supervisor came in at 1 and played a couple of hundred dollars in Keno, and three pint size Stoli's and soda. He said they were sent home early 'to keep overtime' down.

He told me that he got a call from the town supervisor to in 24 hrs make up a Obama wish list. This is a small town in Massachusetts. He came up with $250k for re-roofing, siding, windows a couple of boilers. They called back and said find/make more.

So, Lou, don't think the long arm of Obama and Congress can't reach out and get you in Texas. You got a digital camera. Take a picture of your wallet while you have it.
