Grossie bombed. The reason is quite simple. The successful variety shows of the 70s starred people who were outstanding at improv. So many people (sticks up hand and waves) long for something like the Carol Burnett Show.
This is not rocket science. Lame "stars" won't attract an audience. Genuine yucks will. Want a hit variety show? Combine the cast of Drew Carey's old Whose Line Is It Anyway? show with the "stars" and musical acts.

Thanks for the blast from the past! I started my Saturday with a good laugh. And it's not often you see somebody else make Tim Conway loose it. :-)
A lot of people miss the old variety show format. I think that accounts for some of the success of Dancing with the Stars, which is about the closest thing we have to a quality variety show today. Dancing takes the place of comedy sketches (sometimes there's comical dancing), some pretty terrific singers make appearances, and there's usually a good bit of humor from the judges and host. Whatever, it works and is a throwback, or a nod, to the old variety format. People love it. And thanks for the Carol Burnett outtakes. Priceless!
Heh, isn't this funny? Go to YouTube and look up some of those old Carol Burnett Show clips. They are HYSTERICAL.
The format still works, the networks just don't get it.
