Persistent, gnawing pain

The lower set of braces was installed tonight. When I was a kid I got hit in the face by a baseball during Little League and this feels a lot like it. In January I go back for adjustments and rubber bands. If you wore braces when you were 14 you remember those little rubber bands. You also remember how fun it was to open your mouth too quickly and zing! the rubber band would fly out and whack some kid in the back of the head. I asked the orthodontist, "Am I gonna have to wear the rubber bands 24/7? I am on the phone most of the work day." Fortunately I will only have to wear them 16 hours a day. For 6 months.

I have become Weird Al.

Lou one of my adult kids is considering getting braces (again!), what type do you have and are you happy with them so far?

Rubber bands 16 hours a day for 6 months? I think I'll take the bad teeth!

Hmm, now I'm not so sure if I want to get braces again. I completely forgot about those little rubber bands that would occasionally ricochet into the back of some kid’s head in algebra class. The horror of it all – and I’d probably grind my teeth back into the current position all over again. Braces cost a fortune here. What do you expect the total cost to be in your area?

The cost is $2500, including retainers. It's a company called FastBraces. I think they are only in Texas, but I'm not sure.

The pain is better now. When they clamp in the wire it instantly creates tension and that takes some getting used to.

FCB, yes, I am pleased with the results.

@Lou,
I've never heard of FastBraces.
Do you grind your teeth?
If you had braces before what happened for you to need them again?
How does one know if one ends up in the same place a few years later...
I don't know.

No, I don't grind my teeth. I wore braces when I was a kid. The way the orthodontist explained it, young men (18-20) can still have their teeth shift. I went to a few orthodontists when I was 25 and they all told me I'd need some major surgery on my lower jaw to correct an open bite ($10k minimum for the surgery alone), so I blew it off for a long time. Finally this year I went and said "I don't care about the open bite, just straighten my teeth."
